Cedar Park Christian Dojo
16300 112th Ave. NE Bothell, WA 98011
Description

Cedar Park’s Christian dojo is a ministry of the Cedar Park Church, and as a ministry, it is designed to introduce the student to, or strengthen the participant's walk with Jesus Christ through a form of traditional martial arts training that has a Christian scriptural component to it. Jim Smoak, who is a certified 2nd Dan by the OSMKKF, is the head instructor. Jim is under the leadership of Sensei Jay Gravelle, 5th Dan OSMKKF, who leads the Northwest Budokan family of dojos.

Cedar Park’s Christian Martial Arts ministry is designed to introduce participants to the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ through a Christian form of traditional martial arts training and the growth of their spiritual discipline.

Participants train under a certified Black belt instructor who will motivate them to grow in their relationship with the Lord while they are learning an old Asian art.

For centuries the martial arts have provided a framework upon which individuals developed strong bodies, alert minds, and spiritual discipline. This ministry incorporates these principles while consistently upholding the moral and ethical standards contained within the Holy Scriptures.

The martial art that we study is a very old and traditional form of karate from Okinawa called Shorin-ryu. It is a combination of hard and soft-style techniques. The hard side is often associated with Japanese karate, which is a direct descendant of Okinawan karate. The soft side of Shorin-ryu came from a heavy Chinese Kenpo influence.

Products & Services

Karate is an ancient martial art that originated in Okinawa before Japan took over the country.  Traditional karate is a combination of Okinawan and Chinese self-defense, and the style that our ministry studies is a very traditional form from Okinawa.  Our program is chartered from the Okinawan Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Karate & Kobudo Federation, which is headquartered in Okinawa, Japan.  We teach open hand karate, as well as the use of several traditional Okinawan weapons.  Open hand and weapons are taught in the form of basic technique, pre-arranged forms called kata, and partner drills to strengthen the application of the technique.

So how can a karate class be a Christian ministry?  Well, for a karate practitioner to be successful, he or she has to develop high levels of discipline and focus, respect for the instructor and their fellow students.  Control is developed when working on technique with each other, as well as perseverance to keep focused on what they are learning in the here and now, and not get caught up in being to driven towards their goal to become a black-belt.  These same traits will strengthen the walk of the Christian, and in the course of instruction, we constantly illustrate and reinforce the ties from the path of a karate practitioner, to the walk of a Christian.  For each promotion, the student is required to demonstrate proficiency in the karate technique that they have learned, and they are also required to recite pre-determined scripture and associated principles from memory which form the scriptural theme for each belt level.

Business Hours

Classes are held Tuesday evenings from 7-8pm, and Saturday mornings from 9-10:30am.
There is a $45 start-up fee per student that covers the cost of uniforms, patches and the student’s first training weapon, the bo staff.  To be a member of the OSMKKF, there is a semi-annual dues fee of $18, or annual payment of $36, and there are modest fees for the student to be tested when eligible for promotion.

Outside of the start-up fee, Cedar Park charges no fees for participation in this ministry.  Because the class is taught an adult curriculum, the starting age for students is 11.  We currently have a good mix of youth, teens and adults.
